FAQs

An accent rug is a small rug that draws attention to a certain part of a room. Full area rugs cover a lot of floor space, but accent rugs are usually put next to furniture, next to beds, under entryway tables, or in front of sinks to add color, texture, or focus. They're both pretty and useful because they help define spaces or make areas with a lot of foot activity more comfortable.

If you have a small room, pick a rug that fits the size of the room without taking over the space. Leave at least 6 to 12 inches of floor space around the edges of the rug to make the room feel bigger. Light-colored rugs or rugs with few patterns can make a room look bigger than it really is. Round or oval rugs can soften corners and make the flow better in small rooms.

Only if the rug's care label says it can be washed in a machine. You can wash many small cotton or synthetic rugs in cold water on the gentle cycle. But don't do this with rugs that have rubber, latex, or glued backings, because they might get damaged or shed. Even if the rug is small, it should never be washed in a machine because water can damage the rubber backing and cause fibers to come loose.
