FAQs

At Maia Homes, rugs aren’t just products — they’re pieces of art you live with. What makes ours different is the care, intention, and design soul behind each piece.

✦ Artisan Craftsmanship

Many of our rugs are hand-tufted or hand-knotted, made in small batches using traditional methods passed down through generations. No two pieces are exactly alike — and that’s the beauty.

✦ Luxury Materials

We work almost exclusively with natural fibersNew Zealand wool, cotton, and jute — not mass-market synthetics. These materials don’t just look beautiful; they feel rich, age gracefully, and bring real warmth to your home.

✦ Curated, Not Mass-Produced

Every rug in our collection is carefully curated — designed with color theory, texture, and scale in mind. You won’t find generic beige rectangles here. Whether it’s a scalloped pastel rug, a tiger-patterned statement piece, or a vintage-inspired floral, each design speaks to layered, expressive living.

✦ A Maximalist Eye for Detail

We design with heart. Our rugs are made to spark joy, ground a space, and reflect your personality. We believe bold can still be timeless — and cozy can be artful.

You’re not just buying a rug — you’re choosing the soul of the room.

A well-sized rug brings the whole room together. The general rule is to go big enough to ground your furniture and define the space.

  • In living rooms, we recommend a rug that’s at least 8x10 feet — large enough so that the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit comfortably on the rug.
  • In dining rooms, your rug should extend 24–30 inches beyond the table on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out.
  • In bedrooms, aim for a rug that sits at least 2–3 feet beyond the sides and foot of the bed.

If you’re in between sizes, always size up — a rug that’s too small can make the room feel disconnected. We’re happy to help you choose the right size for your layout.

If you follow a few easy steps, cleaning an area rug won't hurt it. To start, vacuum both sides of the rug to get rid of any dust or dirt on top. Take the rug outside, shake it out, and lay it down on a clean surface as often as you can. Next, look at the care label.

And rugs made of silk, wool, or other soft fibers need to be dry cleaned or cleaned by a professional. Most vinyl or cotton area rugs can be cleaned with water, a soft brush or sponge, and mild soap. Don't let the rug get too wet. Use a clean cloth to wipe it down, and then use towels to soak up any extra water.

Let the rug dry out in the open air before putting it back. You can hang it over a railing or lay it flat in a room with a lot of air flow.

When investing in an area rug — especially one that defines a room — here’s what we gently guide our clients not to do:

1. Choosing the wrong size

This is the most common design mistake. A rug that’s too small will make your room feel fragmented.

  • In living rooms, aim for at least an 8x10 rug so it touches or sits under all major furniture pieces.
  • For bedrooms, ensure the rug extends 2–3 feet around the bed for visual balance and warmth.

Rule of thumb: your rug should connect the furniture, not float beneath the coffee table alone.

2. Prioritizing trend over timelessness

Trendy prints and colors can feel exciting, but they age quickly. Choose rugs with lasting character — refined patterns, artisan techniques, and rich materials.

  • For example, a hand-tufted New Zealand wool rug in a classic geometric or floral pattern will age far more gracefully than a fast-fashion polyester print.

3. Ignoring color relationships

Don’t choose a rug in isolation. Consider how it will harmonize with your walls, furniture, and lighting.

  • If your space has a lot of bold or saturated tones, a neutral wool rug can bring cohesion.
  • If your room is muted, a bold statement rug with jewel tones or warm layers can add needed energy.

Think of your rug as the foundation of the room’s color story — not just an accessory.

4. Settling for synthetic materials

We always recommend natural fibers like wool, cotton, or jute over synthetic ones like polyester. Natural materials:

  • Feel better underfoot
  • Age more beautifully
  • Are more breathable and eco-conscious
  • Are often stain-resistant without chemical treatments

If you want something that feels as good in 5 - 10 years as it does today, go for quality over shortcuts.

There are so many styles to choose from, but here are the most popular rug types — especially for boutique and design-forward homes:

● Hand-Knotted Rugs

Artisan-made on looms, often using wool or silk. They’re heirloom quality and known for their detail and durability. Example: our vintage-style floral and Persian rugs.

● Hand-Tufted Rugs

Made by punching wool through a canvas base — thick, plush, and slightly more affordable than hand-knotted. Great for bold patterns and curved shapes (like our Scalloped Leaf Rug).

● Flatweave Rugs

Lightweight, low-pile, and reversible. Perfect for layering or high-traffic rooms like kitchens and entryways.

● Jute & Natural Fiber Rugs

Textural and neutral — ideal as a base layer or for coastal, rustic, or warm-toned spaces.

●Statement Rugs

Bright colors, bold patterns, unexpected shapes — often used in maximalist interiors. Think leopard prints, checkerboards, or tiger motifs.

Choosing the right type depends on your room, lifestyle, and the feeling you want the space to have. We love helping customers find the perfect piece — whether it’s soft and subtle or bold and unforgettable.
