Thanksgiving history, tradition

Thanksgiving is a big holiday in the US and Canada. People get together with their families, eat, and be happy.   Many people know it for its traditions, food, and spirit of thanksgiving, but not everyone agrees on what these things mean for history and culture.   It talks about Thanksgiving customs, the history of the holiday, what the food means, and what Thanksgiving might be like in 2025.

  How Thanksgiving Began

Pilgrims and Wampanoag people got together for a harvest feast in 1621.  This is where Thanksgiving began.   In many places, harvest holidays have been around for a long time before this. This is what many people think of as the first Thanksgiving.   Because of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a day to be thankful in 1863.  This made it a holiday across the country.

But there are some issues with the story that is based on facts.   Some Native American groups still remember how their places and ways of life were taken away from them during the first few hundred years of American history.   As a way to remember this, some Indigenous groups have made November 21 the National Day of Mourning. This shows a darker side of Holiday history.

  Things people do every Thanksgiving

People do different things on Thanksgiving these days, but these are the ones that most do:

Everyone in the family gets together for Thanksgiving, and they often drive a long way to be with each other.

Food: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie make up the major meal of the party.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City is one of the most famous events. It has big balloons, floats, and shows.

Football Games: Watching NFL games on Thanksgiving is a tradition for many families.

One of the main lessons of the holiday is to be thankful, and families often take turns saying what they are thankful for.

Thanksgiving food: a feast for the eyes

The food is the most important part of Thanksgiving.  Folks have been making some meals for a very long time.   Here are a few of the most well-known Thanksgiving foods:

Turkey is usually the main dish and is baked or fried.

There are two ways to cook stuffing: inside or on top of the turkey. It tastes great either way.

A warm side dish like gravy and mashed potatoes goes well with the main food.

Cranberry sauce gives the meal a sour touch.

Pumpkin pie is a classic treat that has a crunchy crust and a spiced pumpkin filling in the middle.

On Thanksgiving, people look forward to these foods because they make them think of plenty and happiness.

Why do some people dislike Thanksgiving?

People have said bad things about Thanksgiving, even though it's a happy event.   The fights of Indigenous people, whose lands were taken and whose customs were pushed down, are often left out of the history of the holiday.   The fact that Black Friday deals start on Thanksgiving makes a lot of people think that the holiday has lost its original meaning of giving thanks.

The climate is another thing that has been brought up.  Turkey farms with a lot of birds and holiday food waste are both bad for the earth.

What to Expect This Thanksgiving 2025

When Thanksgiving 2025 comes around, the following things will likely happen:

Celebrate in a way that doesn't hurt the earth. More families may choose plant-based foods or food that was found in a responsible way.

People still like to party in person, but technology will keep letting family and friends who can't make it stay in touch.

There is more balance in the history of the holiday now that more people understand and value Indigenous points of view.

Unique Thanksgiving Gifts: More and more, people give and receive gifts on Thanksgiving.  People are given things like journals to write in when they are thankful, unique keepsakes, and treats that were baked at home.

  That being said

You should still spend time with your family and be thankful on Thanksgiving, but you should also think about the past year.   Thanksgiving is still fun when you do the usual things, but it's more important when you know how hard it is.   We can be thankful, aware, and open to good change on Thanksgiving 2025, whether it's through food, family, or deep conversation.
