The dining room floor should be big enough to fit the table and all the chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out. As a general rule, you should leave at least 24 inches around the table on all sides. A rug about 8' x 10' works well for a normal bistro table that seats six people (about 36" x 60"). To make sure the whole table is covered, use a round rug with a diameter at least 4 feet bigger than the tabletop.
A coffee table should be about 16 to 18 inches high, which is about the same height as the seat pillows of the sofas or chairs around it. You can add up to 20 inches if your seat is taller. Comfort and ease of use are important. The table shouldn't be too low that it feels strange or too high that it blocks your view across the room.
First, give your cat scratching sticks or pads made of sisal, cardboard, or wood. Put them near the places where it likes to scratch the most. To make furniture less appealing to pets, cover it with double-sided tape or sprays that are safe for pets. Cut your cat's nails on a regular basis, and if you need to, briefly cover furniture with throw blankets. When they use scratchers, giving them praise helps them form better habits.
