FAQs

Yes, and it’s actually one of the best things you can do to keep it clean. Vacuum it once or twice a week, especially in high-traffic areas.

Just make sure you’re not using the rotating brush (also called a beater bar)—that can rough up the fibers. Most vacuums have a suction-only mode, which works great. Jute rugs do shed a little at first, so regular vacuuming helps them settle in nicely.

Don’t panic, but you’ll want to move fast. First, grab some paper towels or an old cloth and blot up as much of the pee as you can. (Blot, don’t rub!) Then mix a small bowl of equal parts white vinegar and cold water.

Lightly dampen a clean cloth with that mix and gently blot the area again. Finish with a dry towel to soak up any leftover moisture. If you can, aim a fan at the spot or open a window, jute doesn’t like to stay damp.

The key is to clean it without soaking it. Jute and too much water don’t get along.

Keep it simple. Jute rugs don’t need deep cleaning—they like to stay dry. Stick with regular vacuuming and spot cleaning for spills. If you drop something, blot it right away with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

You can also sprinkle some baking soda on the rug every now and then, let it sit for about 15 minutes, and vacuum it up—it freshens things without any moisture. Just avoid steam cleaners or shampooing; wet cleaning can damage the fibers and even cause mold.
