- Its real title is Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq — the "Night Watch" nickname came later, once darkened varnish made the daytime scene look nocturnal
- Enormous in person: the original canvas is over 12 feet (3.6 m) wide
- Famous for its dramatic light and sense of movement, breaking from the stiff, posed group portraits of its day
- Lives today at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it is the star attraction
